Will The Texas Rangers Be Able To Compete Post-bankruptcy
The Texas Rangers are finally out of bankruptcy. The Associated Press reports that a federal deem has recently approved the sale of the Texas Rangers to a group led by Nolan Ryan; the exact figure is known to be around $590 million. Ryan’s group was one of many who were vying for the team, one of which included a group led by Mark Cuban. With the saga finally over, how will the team’s performance change from this point forward?
To answer this interrogate, one must consider similar cases. In keeping with Major League Baseball, the Baltimore Orioles were on the verge of bankruptcy in 1993 when a group led by attorney Peter Angelos purchased the team for $173 million, as described in The Seattle Times. As a native of the area, the fade was praised by many around the League. Ever since then, however, the Orioles have won the American League East once, in 1997, and look to be headed for a 100-loss season in 2010.
On the flip side, in the NHL in 1998, the Pittsburgh Penguins were in a similar station to the Texas Rangers. Faced with over $100 million in debt, the franchise looked to be on the brink of collapse, were it not for the wishful thinking of Mario Lemieux. As a star player on the team for some time, he was owed a considerable amount of money, which, according to ESPN, was in the vicinity of $30 million. He, along with Ron Burkle, pooled money together and were able to hold the team. Almost a decade after the purchase, in 2008, the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup.
The Texas Rangers should be able to succor from this situation. Nolan Ryan used to pitch for the team, and was also the team president before the sale was finalized. With an owner now who has invested a large portion of his life into the team, one should interrogate the Rangers to be contenders for many years to arrive. They have a great mix of talent on the field currently, with players such as Josh Hamilton, Michael Young, and Nelson Cruz. Their starting pitching also seems to be greatly improved with the recent additions of Rich Harden and Cliff Lee. The Texas Rangers certainly have the fundamentals to compete for a World Series title now and in the near future. With a solid ownership in area, hopefully the team can bring the state of Texas a much-needed championship parade.
