Interviews With Chrysler Employees Affected By The Plastech Bankruptcy

I know a few people that work for the Chrysler Corporation. A few of them have been laid off and now with the recent events, the rest of them are alarmed now that they lost their jobs. I interviewed two of them. They asked for anonymity.

The first employee had been working for Chrysler for over fifteen years and has now been notified that she no longer has a job.

Me: Did you eye this coming?

Employee: Yes and no. With the economy in such wound, I have been half expecting the company to lay off people, but since I have been with the company for so long I never expected to lose my job. I also never expected the plant to close entirely.

Me: Did they give you any notice?

Employee Not really. Rumors were circulating, but nothing was ever said “for sure”.

Me: Do you demand any type of money from the company?

Employee: I hope so. I have been with them for a very long time and I have been paying into a retirement thought through the company.

Me: What are your short term plans?

Employee: Well, finding another job for sure. I like working in an auto factory, but I am scared to work for another one because the same thing may happen.

Me: How has this affected you personally?

Employee: I have two kids in Catholic High Schools and now I am not distinct how I am going to continue to pay their tuition. I do have some money saved, but not nearly enough to survive on for long. I have a mortgage and a second mortgage and now I am terrified that I will lose my home. I am a single mother so I don’t have any other income coming into my family. Right now I guess I will honest have to pinch every penny I can and pray that I am able to get my retirement savings and soon. I will initiate pounding the pavement tomorrow in search of another job.

Me: Thanks and best of luck to you and your family.

Employee: Thank you and you are welcome.

The second employee I spoke to has only been with the company for two years and works in the factory on a part-time basis.

Me: Did you see this coming?

Employee: Not at all. I only work there part-time so I fair go to work, do my job and leave. I never expected this.

Me: Did they give you any notice?

Employee: No. I wish they would have though because I would have hopefully been able to earn another job before I lost this one.

Me: Do you expect any type of money from the company?

Employee: No. I only worked part-time and never intended for this to be a long time career, so I never paid into any type of retirement plans or 401k.

Me: What are your short term plans?

Employee: To find another job of course. I am still mildly in shock over this. Now every time I apply for a job I will have a little dismay and be suspicious of its longevity.

Me: How has this affected you personally?

Employee: I used the money I made from this job for my college tuition, room and board and for my general living expenses. I do have some student loans and financial aid, but without the income from this job I won’t be able to pay my room and board fees and I won’t have any money for my personal expenses. I am scared that I will lose my dorm room and my meal plan. I already started sending my resume out and calling some ads in the paper, but I need money now and most employers hold the first check so I won’t have any money for about a month. I have bills due by Friday. Let me also say that this has scared me off from applying to another auto manufacturing plant.

Me: Thanks and best of luck to you.

Employee: Thanks. No jam.

As you can see, the consequences of this situation are dire to all of the people enthusiastic. The bad thing is, is that things like this are happening all over the country and the people that are most affected by them are helpless to stop it.
